On 3 Jan 2026 US Special Forces raided Caracas and captured President Maduro and his wife; Venezuelan officials put the dead at 83-100, including 32 Cuban military personnel. The same day Trump said the US would 'run' Venezuela. At his 5 Jan arraignment in Manhattan, Maduro called himself a 'prisoner of war'.
On 3 January the US kidnapped a sitting president, called it a 'law enforcement action', and nobody at the UN held a vote.
By September the Pentagon had a slice of Venezuela's oil on 100-year concessions, the regime's No. 2 was running the country, the new government had given notice to quit the ICC, and the UN found the repressive apparatus 'intact'.
By the 81st General Assembly in September the condemnation caucus had thinned out at the ballot box. Colombia, Chile and Peru had all changed hands since the raid, and Colombia's new government did not mention Venezuela from the podium at all. Lula said the Venezuelan people deserved to define their own destiny. Cuba walked out of Trump's speech.
Regime changed: one man. Everything else: under new management.
