Joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran began on 28 Feb 2026, codenamed "Operation Epic Fury" (US) and "Operation Roaring Lion" (Israel). On day one Supreme Leader Khamenei was killed along with 40+ senior officials and IRGC commanders, and a strike on a girls' school in Minab killed 150+ (UN fact-finding mission). Iran retaliated against Israel, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Dubai airport shut on 28 Feb; the IRGC declared the Strait of Hormuz closed on 2 March. Nuclear diplomacy had reached a "breakthrough" the day before the strikes - Oman's foreign minister said peace was "within reach." On 28 Feb Trump called for regime change and Netanyahu told Iranians to "take their destiny into their own hands."
Oman's foreign minister announced a nuclear deal breakthrough on 27 Feb. Iran had agreed "never" to stockpile enriched uranium in Geneva talks on 26 Feb. Bombs fell on 28 Feb. The mediator who brokered the deal publicly begged the US "not to get sucked in further."
They got sucked in further. In early March the IAEA said it had found no evidence of an Iranian nuclear weapons programme - the stated justification for 3,000+ strikes. The Assembly of Experts was bombed while convening to elect the next Supreme Leader. Lebanon's 2 March ban on Hezbollah military activity lasted approximately zero hours.
On 4 March Hegseth said they were "just getting started"; on 6 March Trump demanded unconditional surrender. The Security Council's only resolution on the war, on 11 March, condemned "in the strongest terms" only the country that was bombed first, with a record 135 co-sponsors. The ceasefire Guterres hailed as a "critical step" in June lasted three weeks.
As of 7 Sept the Iranian uranium the war was meant to eliminate was, per the IAEA, probably sitting in the Isfahan tunnels, which inspectors could not enter. On 17 Sept a UN mission found reasonable grounds to believe the US committed a war crime by killing ~120 children at a Minab primary school; the next day the White House answered that the only war criminal in this conflict is Iran.
Then came the General Assembly. Trump asked the hall whether to annihilate Iran. Netanyahu called ordering the strikes one of the easiest decisions of his career. Iran's president held up photographs of the dead children. Eighty states signed a statement condemning the closure of a strait and not the bombing that closed it, and the Secretary-General, in his farewell address, managed not to name a single party to the war. Condemnations resolved by the close of high-level week on 26 September, 210 days in: zero. On 6 October, in Islamabad, he asked "all parties" to end it, again naming none. On 8 October Trump promised not to bomb Iran before the midterms. On 11 October, day 225, Iran called the American answer to its reopening plan "insufficient". The strait stayed closed.
