  • Min Aung Hlaing visited Kuala Lumpur on 7 Oct 2026, his sixth bilateral trip to an Asian country since the coup, nine days after the Kyauktaw strike and the same week Malaysia began deporting some 5,000 Myanmar nationals (HRW).
  • Malaysia deported about 1,500 Myanmar nationals on 29 Sept 2026, the first phase of a plan to return some 5,000, over objections from the UN High Commissioner.

ASEAN agreed on a 'Five-Point Consensus' in 2021. Not a single point was implemented.

In May 2026 ASEAN 'noted the conclusion' of the junta's elections; in April the coup leader was sworn in as president and declared that Myanmar 'has returned to the path of democracy', and in August Thailand hosted a state visit for a man with an international arrest warrant.

Fifteen days later his air force bombed a monastery. Moving on.

On 28 September, the day Myanmar was down to speak at the General Assembly, a market in Rakhine was bombed at midday and 50 people died. The Secretary-General strongly condemned it the next day. Malaysia began deporting people back there the same day.
